“Sound is our most primal sense. A baby hears before it sees. Before we understand language, melody & rhythm shape how we feel. Brands that ignore this leave their most powerful emotional lever untouched.”

-       Rajeev Raja (Founder & soundsmith, BrandMusiq)

I was watching a J-drama the other night, and it got me thinking.

Have you ever noticed how in Tokyo, this bright, welcoming little jingle greets you the exact second you walk through the doors of a convenience store? Or how this short, calming jazz melody plays on the train platforms right before the doors close?

If you look closer, the whole country literally has a soundtrack.

Pedestrian crosswalks chirp like birds to guide you safely across busy streets. Even at sunset, neighborhood loudspeakers play a soft folk melody called “Yūyake Koyake” just to gently remind kids to start walking home.

None of this is accidental. It’s how Japan helps its people lower stress and gently guides crowds without anyone even realizing it.

Sound controls how we feel, completely under the radar.

Humans have been doing this for thousands of years. Back in the day, people thought music could heal through literal magic. Today, science proves they weren't entirely wrong. Researchers have found that the right sounds can lower our stress, lift our mood, and even help patients heal faster in hospitals.

So if sound can calm patients...
If it can shape the mood of an entire train station...
Could it also shape how people feel about a brand?

Mastercard definitely thought so.

Back in 2019, they decided to create their first-ever global sound. To make sure it hit right across different cultures, they teamed up with audio experts all over the world, including BrandMusiq - India's first sonic branding company.

Just like a mother hums a gentle tune to calm a crying toddler, Mastercard wanted a simple sound to calm your brain at the precise moment you're about to part with your hard-earned money.

To figure out what they should sound like, they literally imagined their brand as a human being with two distinct personalities. First, The Magician, because they want to create "priceless," magical moments. Second, The Regular Person, because every day financial tools should feel welcoming to absolutely everyone.

They connected these personalities to rasas—which is the ancient Indian science of human emotions. They landed on three specific feelings they wanted you to experience at checkout: Optimism, Joy, and Wonder.

From there, they built a precise, 3-second musical logo—what BrandMusiq calls a MOGO®.

Just three seconds!

But today, you hear those exact same notes in ads and checkout apps all over the world.

The Psychology: Sound Branding

See, spending money actually activates the brain's physical pain centers. That little uplifting chime at the end of a transaction makes you go from "ugh, I just spent money" to "awesome, I'm all done and secure."

Marketing research shows that a distinct sonic identity can trigger a 5% increase in perceived brand value. Ads with sonic branding are 8.53 times more effective at driving memory recall than visuals alone.

Because sound is processed directly in your limbic system—the part of the brain responsible for emotion and memory—we quickly commit those feelings and associations to memory. For a marketer, there are few assets more powerful than that.

💡The 5-Minute Practice

So, take 5 minutes today and look at how your own business or content can move past "sonic anonymity" using  Bjorn Thorleifsson's 3-step framework:

1.     Map Your Sonic Playground: Look at your immediate landscape. What are your competitors doing with audio? If they are all relying on generic, forgettable stock music, you have a big opportunity to craft a sound that is uniquely yours.

2.     Align Sound with Personality: Figure out exactly what you want to achieve when someone encounters you. Create a concrete action plan to design sounds that naturally echo your brand’s actual personality and voice, rather than just filling dead silence.

3.     Move from "Nice" to Proven: Don't just pick a melody because it "sounds pleasant" to you. Marry your creative audio choices with testing methodologies. When you test how sounds actually impact consumer perception, a nice jingle transforms into a legitimate business asset.

The Genuine Rule: The world is constantly fighting for your attention, but whoever controls the soundtrack controls your emotions.

If this gave you a new way to look at human behavior, share it with a friend who wants to stop playing corporate theater and build something genuine.

Until next time,
With love❤️ ,

Thusharika
